The Peruvian mining sector generated more than S/ 127,000 million for the national treasury through taxes and contributions in the last two decades (2001-2020). This was stated by Rudy Laguna, director of the Center for Competitiveness and Development (CCD) of the San Martín de Porres University, within the framework of Heading to PERUMIN.

“We are talking, more or less, about USD 30 billion. That is equivalent to building 254,000 ICU beds or more than 50,000 oxygen plants. So the amount of resources generated is very significant," he said.

He also pointed out that, of said total, S/ 66,000 million were transferred to the regions for canon and royalties. Ancash was the region that received the highest transfers for canon and royalties: S/ 14,890 million. They are followed by Arequipa (S/ 8,721 million), Cajamarca (S/ 7,581 million) and Apurímac (S/ 1,288 million).

"What one observes is the high international participation, the contribution in different aspects such as purchases or the entire income generation part, and the most important thing begins with the relationship that the mining sector has with the population," he said.

He added that one of the effects has also been the reduction of poverty in the country, through the generation of jobs and transfers. “Since 2004, the poverty rate has fallen by 38.5%, reaching 20.2% in 2019. Without proper use of mining resources, in 2019, the country's poverty would have been 35.5% ”, he said.

He also pointed out that the execution of the mining projects portfolio (valued at USD 56,158 million) will reduce national poverty to 15% in the next ten years (by 2031). This represents 12 percentage points less than the current poverty rate, which would have risen to approximately 27% (by the end of 2020) due to the effects of the pandemic.

The study also indicates that the new mining projects will generate fiscal resources of more than S/ 80,000 million by 2031. In addition, it is estimated that, by that year, mining will benefit more than 36% of the national population (more than 15.5 million people), through 3.8 million direct and indirect jobs. 

It is also estimated that the mining industry will make a significant contribution to national economic growth, with an average contribution of 1.3 percentage points by 2031 (approximately one third of the country's potential economic growth).
