Cajamarca, FEBRUARY 15 2022 Cajamarca has more possibilities to develop a mining cluster in the north of Peru

Cajamarca could be the leading region in the future development of the mining cluster in the northern macro-region of Peru; however, it will have to overcome interconnected infrastructure challenges and linkages with other economic sectors, as highlighted by Eng. Miguel Cardozo, Vice President of the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers.

He commented that the awakening of the Conga, Galeno and Michiquillay mining projects in Cajamarca will speed up the possibility of a mining cluster in northern Peru, which will make it possible for these three operations to share productive infrastructure, building a common mineral pipeline for the transportation of concentrates and implementing a first-class highway or a train to carry the minerals to the ports of Salaverry or Bayóvar.

“An average distance of 7 kilometers separates one mining project from the other; that is, the three mining deposits lie along a 14-kilometer strip. Furthermore, they have similarities in their production and export parameters and may create potential synergies, such as a common site for the storage of mining tailings in safer conditions”, he added.

In his opinion, the infrastructure resulting from the mining cluster could be the driving force for agricultural growth through large irrigation projects that could enable the use of farming lands mostly in Cajamarca, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Pura and Tumbes and this could even be further optimized with the startup of construction in La Granja and Cañariaco.

“Not only shared mining infrastructure is created among operations, but also infrastructure to boost other economic sectors and drive them towards prosperity, offering all the possibilities to providers from the areas of influence and outside these areas to transport goods and services to the mining projects”, commented Eng. Miguel Cardozo.

Rumbo a PERUMIN Cajamarca

As part of its activities, the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru and the Organizing Committee of PERUMIN 35 will hold a decentralized Rumbo a PERUMIN, which this time will focus on the mining region of Cajamarca and will take place during the 16th and 17th of February.

Under the slogan “Consensus for the progress of Cajamarca”, this new edition will be a space for analysis and debate to address the present of mining in Cajamarca, the opportunities of the sector for the communities and the challenges for the socio-economic development of the region.

The event will work out a program of technical and commercial conferences, which will also be transmitted through its official channels in Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/PeruminOficial) and YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/c/Perumin) so that they are available to the general public.
