Arequipa, July 10th, 2019.  The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) and the Organizing Committee of PERUMIN 34 presented in Arequipa the objectives and news of the second largest mining convention in the world. This event aims at involving professional young people and students of various careers and majors in mining through innovation and positioning this industry as a platform of opportunities for startup-project development.

“It is aimed at this challenges that our motto is “Mining: Science, Innovation, Technology and Education”, explained Carlos Galvez, President of the Organizing Committee, who stated that PERUMIN will set a before and after for the history of Convention Mining, he said. “We are carrying out an event that involves the academia, the scientific and technological communities together, schools, and the civil society”, he said.

PERUMIN 34 has 3 parts: The Mining Summit, the Forum for Technology, Innovation and Sustainability – TIS Forum, and The Mining Technology Exhibition – EXTEMIN. Innovation will be the main topic in each of them and various industry-related aspects will be discussed, such as sectoral challenges, exploration and geology, social and environmental management, human capital development, work and education, among others.

Each part (the Mining Summit, TIS Forum, and EXTEMIN) has its own work program and topics. In addition to IIMP Scholarships and the National Mining Award, several novelties are added such as PERUMIN Inspires, an award to recognize social-innovation initiatives in the Peruvian Andes, the online mine, the youth conference program, school visits, among others.

The event expects to host over 60,000 people

PERUMIN 34 will take place from September 16th to September 20th at Cerro Juli Convention Center, where construction, electrification, sanitation, and connectivity works are being carried out to host over 60,000 attendees, among entrepreneurial leaders, investors, authorities, public officers, professionals, students, and the general public, all of them coming from over 40 countries.

Over 800 institutions, and national and international companies will participate in the EXTEMIN fair distributed in over 1,400 booths. 1,500 students will host each one of them.

Also, there will be an Innovation Room with projects developed by leading companies in the industry and initiatives developed by students and professional young people during the Towards PERUMIN activities who will have the opportunity to exhibit their entrepreneurships and startups to potential clients and/or investors.

A tradition in Arequipa

The President of the IIMP, Luis Rivera, explained that PERUMIN identifies with Arequipa as it is an emblematic region for the mining activity. “It is part of the South Corridor, which concentrates the greatest mineral production and export activities thanks to operations like Cerro Verde, Toquepala, Cuajone, Antapaccay, Las Bambas, among others,” he said.

He reminded that PERUMIN was born in 1954 as a mean to analyze and debate the challenges of mining and to make public its importance for the country’s economic and social development, as well as to strengthen specialized professional development of the participants.

“We see with satisfaction the transcendence the event has gained over the years. It is a response to the importance of mining in our country’s comprehensive economic and social development,” said Rivera.

The presentation of PERUMIN 34 was held at the National University of San Agustín and was attended by regional and municipal authorities, businessmen and the media, in addition to the team members that make up the Organizing Committee of the event.

880 STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONAL YOUNG PEOPLE ATTENDED “TOWARDS PERUMIN”

With the purpose of involving young people with mining, the Organizing Committee of PERUMIN 34 has been developing since July 2018 a series of “Towards PERUMIN” activities that have brought together more than 880 students and young professionals of various careers and areas of expertise.

“Five days of fair are not enough to involve young people with mining. This is achieved by generating learning and training opportunities, in addition to providing the possibility to develop professionally and business with the support of mining”, said Carlos Gálvez, president of the Organizing Committee of PERUMIN 34.

Thus, during Towards PERUMIN, three hackathons were developed that brought together about 700 participants from 40 universities in the country. They had the mission of developing technological innovation proposals applicable to the multiple challenges that the mining industry has, from the operational, environmental, social, security, logistics, among others (a fourth hackathon will be developed a week before PERUMIN at the University National San Agustín de Arequipa).

The winning works (entrepreneurship projects and ‘startups’) will be presented at the PERUMIN 34 Innovation Pavilion, where young people will have direct contact with potential investors and/or clients.

On Towards PERUMIN, the Symposium of Technology, Innovation, Communication, Automation and Robotics (TICAR) and the Technological Innovation Award were also developed, which managed to convene more than 150, and 26 participants and proposals respectively (both contests will present a next edition in August 2019).

IIMP ORGANIZES PERUMIN IN AREQUIPA SINCE 1976

  • The Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers is the event’s Official Organizer since 1954.
  • PERUMIN is the second largest mining convention in the world.

PERUMIN 34 Mining Convention, the second largest mining convention in the world, was officially launched in Arequipa.

Since 1954, the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP) organizes the PERUMIN every two years and in 1976 was first held in Arequipa. Since 1995, the last twelve editions of the event were held in the White City.

The IIMP has the mission of contributing with technical and specialized knowledge to the development of mining in Peru and encouraging dialogue for the search for consensus, in order to forge a modern and responsible mining.

PERUMIN is the most representative event of the IIMP, an association of technicians, professionals and companies related to the mining industry, expert and opinion leader on mining issues.

The objective of the mining convention is to analyze and debate about the challenges facing the mining industry and make known its importance for the economic and social development of the country.

"PERUMIN constitutes a space for dialogue and convergence between the various actors linked to the development of mining in our country such as the authorities, leading opinion companies, academia, among others," said Luis Rivera, president of the IIMP during the presentation conference.

It also seeks to strengthen the specialized professional development of its participants and disseminate new knowledge resulting from research, innovation and application of new technologies in mining operations.
