CCIA: “Arequipa is ready to meet the requirements and needs of the Conventionists”.

Stated the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arequipa (CCIA), Aldo Aranzaens, about the mining event that will be carried out

We talked to the new chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arequipa (CCIA), Aldo Aranzaens, who showed his support to the development of PERUMIN 33 Mining Convention, event organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) that will be held from September 18 through 22 at this university, located in Arequipa.

What is the importance of mining for Arequipa?

For Arequipa, as for the rest of the country, mining is a key economic activity for the movement of economy and work. Currently, in Arequipa, regarding both jobs and mining investment we represent 15% of the national investment. We have important mine sites such as Cerro Verde, Southern and Las Bambas that have contributed greatly, during the last few years, to the growth of the Southern Macro Region. It is a sector that we should care for but also a big social work is needed to avoid conflicts and to improve their relationship with communities to develop these projects.

Delays, such as with Tía María, must be avoided. Unfortunately, this is a project with small probability of moving forward because there was a luck of a good communication development with the community and entities with different interests could convey ideas based on prejudices and not on the multiple benefits of the project. For Arequipa, it is crucial to develop this US$ 1500 million project, we need for this a better management from the Government.

How did Arequipa react regarding the start-up of Tambomayo mining project, owned by Buenaventura, in the beginning of 2017?

The start of a project will always generate an economic reactivation. So far, we have received better income in collection, manly from mining, but there has been a 6.8% fall in jobs. Obviously, Cerro Verde expansion has ended, and this caused a sharp fall but the start-up of projects such as Tambomayo will definitively help to prevent this fall from been too severe.

The construction of Pampa de Pongo project is also expected for this year, and this will be of benefit for Arequipa

Of course, as will all projects, we expect this to start as soon as possible and to have no last-minute problems. We want the government’s plan to be speed up, regarding social progress and a reduction of proceedings. Mining investment has been stopped at its tracks, which is of concern regarding the investment. Thus, we call upon the authorities to carry out their greatest efforts to improve the situation.

What has been the progress of the project of converting Arequipa into the Conventions Capital in Peru?

The project has started to gain shape. Arequipa enjoys many characteristics to be the city of conventions. We rely on a good hospitality infrastructure, a great architecture, tourist attractions and an excellent gastronomy to achieve it. We are working on this. In this sense, PERUMIN is a referent for us because of its dimension. It is one of the largest events in the world, this backs up to state that we are prepared to become the Peruvian capital of conventions.

What is the Arequipa businessmen expectation about the celebration of PERUMIN and how much is estimated to be mobilized during the event in Arequipa?

As entrepreneurs, we are flattered that the IIMP keeps trusting in Arequipa as the venue of PERUMIN 33 Mining Convention. We are convinced that we are a city that will meet all the requirements and needs of Conventionists, our objective is to them to enjoy their stay and to leave happy from the city. We hope that the reduction in mining megaprojects, in the world and in our country, does not diminishes the interest of the participants and the business climate that is generated during this important fair. We are not currently forecasting an exact number that may be mobilized during the vent, but we expect figures to match prior editions.

Which message would you give to the participants of PERUMIN 33?

Come with your best disposition, Arequipa is ready to welcome you and to register to this Mining Convention where not only networking will be possible but also good business relations.
