“Towards PERUMIN” continues to go forward with integrating education and the mining industry

“Towards PERUMIN” lectures have started and will be held every Saturday until September 16, at Paraninfo Arequipa of the UNSA.

With the presence of many academic authorities and mining sector experts, on August 5 the “Towards PERUMIN” cycle of lectures, organized by the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP) at the Paraninfo Arequipa of the Public University of San Agustín (UNSA). This academic program is aimed at students, professors and staff of this university.

This cycle intends, once more, to strengthen the interaction between the Academy and the Industry in an activity as important as mining, Horacio Barreda, research vice chancellor of UNSA stated during his opening statement.

Rohel Sánchez, UNSA chancellor, also attended; he mentioned the importance of releasing mining canon resources to route them to fund education research projects.

“Thanks to the agreement signed with the IIMP we are moving towards this objective with the creation of the first Mining Research Center of Peru. Also, celebrating PERUMIN at UNSA shows our commitment to attain the objective of closing the gap between the Academy and the mining sector” -he stated.

Then, engineer Luis Rivera, chairman of Towards PERUMIN, also highlighted the integration of the university with the mining industry to jointly work in development and research plans to benefit the country. “The mining industry is not only about technology and innovation but also development and progress”, he asserted.

On the other hand, the architect Eva Arias de Sologuren, chair of PERUMIN 33 Organizing Committee, noted that this cycle of lectures takes place in an encouraging time for the industry and it contributes to truly value the role of mining in the country since it promotes the decentralization level needed by the country.

Finally, Arequipa’s mayor, Alfredo Zegarra, who after stating the importance of an event such as “Towards PERUMIN” declared the cycle of lectures as open.

The first conference of Towards PERUMIN was delivered by the engineer Víctor Gobitz, IIMP chairman, who presented the key lecture titled “Macro and micro economic benefits from mining, 1990-2016”.

The lecture was based on the study prepared by the Centre for Competitiveness and Development (CCD) in alliance with the IIMP. This study will be presented at PERUMIN 33 Mining Convention.

The expert highlighted that, nowadays, the mining project investment portfolio reaches US$ 46.796 billion. If executed in the following years, the GDP would grow by 11%. Also, direct employment in the industry would include 255,000 direct jobs and 1.6 million of indirect jobs. In this way, over 7.7 million people would be benefited in the country.

According the IIMP chairman “these figures are reachable for mining has the capability to act as an economic and commercial activity booster in areas with little production activity; thus, creating development opportunities for thousands of Peruvians”.

Other topics to be addressed in other sessions are Research Management at UNSA, New ways in global mining, Metal-Mechanic cluster competitiveness for mining, Mining and poverty reduction, University Management and the Mining Canon, Cerro Verde update, Metallurgy at UNSA, among others.
